KIT BUILD LOCAMOTIVES
NEW BUILT LOCAMOTIVES
Category

Designed and built in the workshop here, we originally conceived our first locomotive, “Stafford”, as a robustly-engineered, easy to drive locomotive – something equally at home on a garden railway or public running at the local club.

With more than 150 locomotives built, the design has proved a powerful, reliable performer on private, club and commercial railways throughout the UK and overseas – it has now expanded to a range of engines from 5 inch to 10 1/4 inch gauge, with a choice of styles and wheel arrangements.

You can see them running at pretty much any club track in the UK – check out our YouTube playlist here to see our engines at work.

All engines in the range are available as ready to run, or in fully machined kit form to build yourself.

Where do you get the engines made?

Easy – we make them ourselves, here in the workshop. First time we heard this one it made us laugh, but the question has come up enough times now for us to realise that there is a genuine belief that everything is made overseas these days! Far from the truth – our engines are conceived, designed and manufactured in the UK just outside Lincoln, a city with a great heritage of steam engineering.

Does the engine come with a boiler certificate?

Yes. The boilers are built to rigorously-controlled standards and inspected at key stages of the build by Lloyds who witness a twice working pressure hydraulic test when complete before stamping their mark on the boiler. The boiler itself is dual UKCA/CE-marked, delivered complete with all material and welding certification allowing future testing either by a commercial or model engineering club inspector. Prior to dispatch, all engines are steamed to check operation of safety valve and injectors.

I’m a complete beginner – would I be able to drive and look after the engine?

Absolutely. The engine comes with a comprehensive set of operating & maintenance instructions which cover everything from unpacking the engine when it first arrives to dropping the fire at the end of a day’s running. Having taught people to drive everything from a 2 1/2 inch gauge “Dyak” to a 7 1/4 inch gauge Baldwin K36 over the years, there aren’t many problems we haven’t come across! Anything that isn’t covered in the manual, we’re only ever an email or phone call away.

There are quite a lot of engines in your range – how do I pick the right one for me?

Dead easy – read this handy bit of paper we put on the back of the price list handed out at exhibitions, you’ll know your Feldbahn 0-6-0s from your Stafford FC7s in no time. There are pictures, further information and brochure downloads on the individual engine pages.

Will I be able to get spares in the future?

Yes. We keep most of the “service” type spares (bushes, valves, etc) in stock on the shelf. The remainder can be manufactured rapidly using the original fixtures and programs used to build the engine.

Is it guaranteed?

Yes. The engine is guaranteed for 12 months against defects in manufacture. Just like our secondhand engine policy, we like to think it’s a “no quibble” arrangement, the design is intended to provide a reliable, easy to service piece of machinery which will give good service for many years if looked after sensibly.

How do I order one?

Just ring us up! For ready to run engines we ask for a deposit of £250, for which you will be given a receipt, your engine’s works number and expected delivery date. For kit build engines just call us up to say which kits you’d like, then pay as you go.

Table of Contents

We manufacture a range of parts and accessories, designed mainly although not exclusively for use on the locomotives we build. We can supply anything from a motion pin to a complete set of machined cylinders, an increasing number of which we keep as stock parts for immediate despatch. All parts shown here are designed and built in house.

We supply several of the commercial model builders with our components, which have found their way into such diverse things as steam launches, stationary engines, traction engines and, of course, locomotives of all sizes (although mainly, it must be said, the larger ones).

In keeping with our locomotive-building philosophy, the things we make are designed and manufactured for long life and reliable operation – many have found their way into commercial applications (in both our own and other builders’ engines) with every success. Again, like our engines, all are backed up with a no-quibble 12 month warranty against defects in material or workmanship.

If there’s anything you need that’s not listed, let us know – whilst there are new designs on the drawing board all the time, we’re always open to suggestions for things not currently available.

January 2021 – Important information for European customers:

Note that from 1st January 2021, European countries will charge VAT on the total price, including shipping, of any second hand goods imported from the UK. Typically around 20%, this will be charged on entry into the country and is in addition to the prices shown on this website. Sales of second hand goods to the UK or anywhere else in the world are unaffected.

We are always interested in buying or part exchanging live steam locomotives and traction engines, from small spirit-fired to large scale coal-fired engines – either running, part complete or in need of repair.

Everything we sell is supplied on 14 days approval: if it’s not what you expected, or thought had been described, return it to us for a refund in full less shipping costs.

Engines listed on the “Locomotives” and “Traction Engines” pages are all supplied with a 90 day written “no quibble” warranty unless otherwise stated. Most have tested boilers – hydraulic test, steam test or both – and expiry dates are listed under the item’s “details” tab. Some engines in these sections are not tested or steamed – this can be for a variety of reasons, including those engines which are: locomotives of gauge 1 or smaller; traction engines of 1 inch scale or smaller; particularly old or of historical interest; new and unsteamed, which would normally only have a hydraulic test.

Engines listed on the “Running restorations” page typically will require restoration work and/or recommissioning for steaming. In this category we list the “barn finds” and engines that, for a variety of reasons, may not have been steamed in many years. Some, but not all will have been tested in the works, details of any work required will be noted in the listing.

Engines listed on the “Projects” page range from part-built through to complete restorations (and pretty much everything in between) – unless specifically stated, boilers are given a visual inspection but have not been tested and are priced accordingly.

All engines listed on the website are on our premises, available for inspection by appointment.

Do you offer a warranty?

Absolutely – all products listed on the locomotives and traction engines pages are subject to a 90 day written “no quibble” warranty. Additionally, products in all categories are sold on 14 days approval. If it’s not what you expected or thought had been described, we will take it back provided it is in substantially the same condition that it went out. We refund the price in full less shipping – no “ifs”, no “buts”, no quibbling!

Do you buy engines?

Yes, we are always interested in acquiring engines of the type that we sell. If you know of a steam engine for sale, in absolutely any condition, please let us know. Engines bought outright, or we are happy to take them on a commission sale basis, or pay you a finder’s fee if you put us in touch with an engine which we later purchase.

Do you take part-exchanges?

Yes, pretty much anything apart from wives or stereos. If it’s something steam or workshop-related, we’re happy to make an offer as part exchange against anything listed on the website.

What happens if I want to change my engine at some time in the future?

Whether you want to sell it, or exchange against another engine, we’re always happy to take things back we’ve sold in the past.
